Prominent Military and Original Companions

The Loyal Legion has had many prominent Original and Hereditary Companions, including Presidents Abraham Lincoln (posthumous), Ulysses S. Grant, Chester A. Arthur, Rutherford B. Hayes, Benjamin Harrison, William McKinley, Herbert C. Hoover, and Dwight D. Eisenhower. Some of the more notables include Generals William Tecumseh Sherman, Phil Sheridan, Winfield Scott Hancock, Joshua Chamberlin and Admirals David Farragut, William Porter, and George Melville.

The information below provides the name of the Original Companion, his military rank, regiment, and branch of service.  Included in the list are Companions of the Third Class or who are today referred to as Honorary Companions, who did not serve in the federal military, as well as Hereditary Companions who gained their membership via inheritance (sons) or close collateral relationship (grandsons, nephews, etc). Companions of the Third Class qualified for membership by significantly contributing to the war effort or well-being of the Republic and personified in their own lives the principles of the Order.

The data were compiled by generations of members of MOLLUS who faithfully served the Order.  This initial aggregation was originally constructed by Past Commanders-in-Chief Rev. Dr. Robert Girrard Carroon and Douglas Reed Niermeyer. We are aware that there are various errata throughout, and the list is being cleansed and corrected.

Below is a list of nearly 12,000 Companions arranged in alphabetical order. Select from the various alphabet letter links below to see the many MOLLUS Companions.
